- Work experience in this trade, ideally 2 years in the last 5 years
- Some German, or you are learning it now. A2 helps a lot.
- A passport valid for at least 18 months

Two routes: your training is recognised by the Chamber of Crafts or IHK FOSA, or you use the experience route: a state-recognised training of 2 years or more, 2 years of experience in the last 5 years, and a job that pays at least 45,630 EUR a year (2026) or pays by collective agreement. With a job offer and A2 German, a recognition partnership lets you work while the recognition runs.
What it costs
Recognition at the chamber often costs up to about 600 EUR plus translations, and there are visa fees. Sometimes the employer pays, sometimes you. We tell you before anything is due.

Not always. A job offer plus recognition is the usual way. With a state-recognised training of 2 years or more and 2 years of work experience, there is also a route without recognition. We check which one fits you.
The law sets no level for the normal skilled-worker route. The recognition partnership needs A2. Employers and safety rules often need more, so start learning early.
The chamber must decide within 3 months after your documents are complete. Collecting documents and translations can take longer. Chambers often charge up to about 600 EUR, plus translations.
No. You do not need a Meister to work as an employee. It is only needed to open your own business in many trades.
Not automatically. The employer or the customer decides which certificates they accept, and a new test in Germany is common. Bring all your certificates.
There is no general work visa for helpers without training. Citizens of six Western Balkan countries have a special rule. Vocational training in Germany (Ausbildung) is a different route.
